Kindle Direct Publishing is incredibly popular with new authors. Instead of having to endure the stress and often disappointment that comes with traditional publishing, authors are now taking their fate in their own hands by self-publishing on Amazon Kindle.
Amazon’s KDP is pretty straightforward: You fill out the blurb, you put in a title and upload your cover and document. You press “next” and in 48 hours – if everything went well, your book is online and for sale on Amazon’s massive platform. But there are some important rules you need to follow in order to make your book into a bestseller:
The editing process is very important for your book, and I would almost always recommend paying a professional to edit your book. There are two ways a book is edited and both are of equal importance.
First there is the copy-editing. A professional editor will go over your book, pick out sentences that feel a bit wonky and rewrite them, he or she will go over your document, asking you to leave pieces out, to rewrite your book or even to kill your darlings.
After the copy-editor your book will go through to yet another editor who will take out all of the spelling mistakes and makes sure your punctuation and grammar is on point. Now, why is this so important? Well, if you have spent months – sometimes even years, writing your book, it would be sad if your book would get bad reviews just due to bad sentence structure, plot holes or spelling mistakes…?
The cover of your book is without doubt one of the most important parts of the process. “A picture is worth more than a thousand words” is very true for books as well and although people will never ever want to be caught judging a book by its cover, everyone does it.
Why? Well first, the cover says a lot about the genre of the book. Young adult books have a very distinct style while crime and romance books have another.
Second, it shows how much effort an author has put into his or her book. If we for instance, take a bath, do our hair up, put on a mud mask, wear our best perfume and have put on killer make up… it would be a shame to take out our most shabby clothes from the washing bin to put on for an important date.
Professionally styled covers are not hard to come by and believe me: they are a must!
Since Amazon is just a specialised version of google, it is important to get your SEO (Search Engine Optimization) right. This way it is easier to get found. Amazon hosts millions of self-published books and it is incredibly easy to get lost in the crowd.
Plan what journey readers should make and take to get to your book, use tools like keyword planners to find out what your customers are looking for on Amazon and try to incorporate these keywords as much as possible into your Amazon sales page.
Reviews are incredibly important for Amazon. It is an indication of how many people have downloaded your book and the 4 and 5 star reviews are a seal of quality. As a self-publishing author, it is often hard to get reviews. One way to get reviews is by actively asking people at the end of the book to leave a review. This has shown to be a great help in getting more reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.
Another important aspect of growing your book into a bestseller is marketing: you will not be able to sell your book to people that do not know it exist. You can do marketing on social media, you can have SEO Professionals look at your pages, you can have people build you a website, do outreach with bloggers and other media and even get you more reviews on your Amazon page.
